Analyzing The Constituent Parts of The Apocalyptic Narratives

Joel 3

We are walking in today:  Analyzing The Constituent Parts of The Apocalyptic Narratives

Teaching from the book:  Preaching and Teaching from the Old Testament: A guide to the church.
by Walter C. Kaiser Jr.

Witness the finger of God (Adonai) throughout the Bible:  H676 etsba (ets' bah) in the sense of grasping and something to seize with.
Exodus 8:15, 31:18; Deuteronomy 9:10; Luke 11:20

Yahweh is speaking to the word written on our hearts, Fiveamprayer!  His Torah will cause us all to stand!

Joel 3:1-3 “After this, I will pour out my Spirit on all humanity.Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions;  and also on male and female slaves in those days I will pour out my Spirit.  I will show wonders in the sky and on earth —blood, fire and columns of smoke. - CJB.

As we continue analyzing the book of Joel and the call to Teshuvah, discussing apocalyptic proclamations from Yahweh. The book of Joel 3, starts off with the calling of decision, in the valley of Jehosaphat. This proverbial call to decide on one side to follow the Torah leading to blessings and on the other side to follow the ways of the nation's causing curses. The call to the nations to repent, the call of returning the children of Yahweh from slavery in the nations and pending disaster upon the surrounding nations were the children of Yahweh where in bondage. Due to disobedience of Yahweh's teachings and instructions the Torah--time and time again we see as we read the Tanakh. The rebellion of Israel and the retribution and penalty for their sins or missing the mark.
Yet we still see even though the hard-headed, stiffnecked nation, continued to receive favor after a set time of retribution and restoration. Even in Joel 3 ,Yahweh promises the Ruach Hakadesh/Holy Spirit poured out and gifts of prophecy, dreams and visions bestowed on all mankind. A returning to the Land from being scattered amongst the nations.

Joel 3 can be looked at or segmented into 5 typical elements:

1. An announcement about the last day verses 1-2
For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

2.An explanation or reason for this announcement verses 2-3,5
I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land. And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink. Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things:

3. A declaration of war on evil and summons for the enemies of Yahweh to present themselves for earth's final show down verses 9-12
Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong. Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O Lord. Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.

4.The horrors of The Day of the Lord described. Verses 13-16
Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision. The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

5. A listing of final blessings from Yahweh for His people verses 17-21
Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. So shall ye know that I am the Lord your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim. Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land. But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation. For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the Lord dwelleth in Zion.

So we see throughout Joel the prophecy of the present judgments and pending judgement of the world or the nations synonymous for us even now of the correction of the people to return to the ancient path! The call to make a decision to follow Yahweh's plans, He gave to a holy nation the children of Israel or to continue the pagan and idolatrous worship of this world. His word alone causes repentance His word alone causes Teshuvah. His word alone causes victory or defeat will you walk in the Torah teachings and instructions?
Once you have been shown the end result of your presented path, will you choose life or death? The knowledge, understanding and wisdom of Yahweh, given to the Hebrew nation of Kings and Priests. Who were to teach the nations of a King and His Kingdom principles. This vastly differs from the systems of this world.  To hear more of this teaching click here.
