The offerings and sacrifices that are taught in the beginning of the book of Leviticus, are the instructions from Almighty God, Yahweh who was showing the people how to walk with Him in holiness. Leviticus 11:44 For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. The love that the God of the Hebrews has for His people caused Him to instruct them in the ways to live. What to do for unintentional sins and what happens with intentional sin? The Hebraic mindset does not look at bringing offerings or sacrifices to appease our Creator. It was to make temporary atonement for their trespasses. That what their actions have done, should result in their death--but instead this charge of death falls to the animal that the priests would offer in their place. There are different offerings or sacrifices based on the situation, take guilt for example. This offering was for stealing or a breech of trust. A process was given to redeem the people from their mistakes. Instruction was available to reduce, repeat offenders of the same offenses. Any good parent teaches their child the importance of good behavior and telling the truth. Once the concept is clear then the consequences come in gradually. If the behavior that was perfected is not longer upheld as worthwhile to complete, the consequences could progress. There is a balance between having those you care for to be close to you, yet the mutual respect and care also plays a part. We have to get out of the mindset that we have free reign to treat our Heavenly Father, Abba any way-- that we would not expect correction or consequences. As we continue to read the Torah portion, we find more of what to do. That is how gracious He is, He teaches us first before we are held accountable for our wrong doing, especially while unaware of our trespassing. This kind of grace we do not experience in our current life. The focus on the harshness of His word, totally eclipses the grace that He affords us! In His desire to have His special treasure, us--in right standing with Him, He even came to the earth. Came covered in flesh and made the perfect atonement for our trespasses that we would be able to come into and remain in the presence of the righteous and holy God, Yahweh!
